HBO has filed federal copyright infringement lawsuits alleging illegal downloads of the show “Game of Thrones”.

Your first notice of the lawsuit will probably be a letter from your internet service provider (ISP) like Comcast, Cox, Time-Warner, Verizon or AT&T, and a subpoena from HBO.

HBO accuses defendants of copyright infringement by using software such as BitTorrent and the internet to obtain the show “Game of Thrones” without paying the appropriate license fee.

HBO’s lawsuit is one of many “free movie” download cases we see, which are sometimes called “copyright troll” lawsuits or BitTorrent lawsuits. BitTorrent is a common software people use to illegally obtain movies online.

Critics of these lawsuits say it’s about the movie company generating more revenue. The movie company says it is filing these lawsuits to stop piracy of its intellectual property.
