Our ISP Subpoena Services
Once we review your court filing, we can match your case to the service that fits.
| Service | What We Do | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Case assessment | We pull your federal filing and find the exact compliance deadline. | 24-48 hours |
| Motion to quash | We file a federal motion without naming you to stop your ISP from releasing your identity. Courts often deny these motions, so we file one only when the legal grounds support it. | Before the ISP deadline |
| Confidential settlement | We settle under your IP address, so your name stays off the public record. You provide financial documents to the plaintiff’s attorneys under a strict confidentiality agreement, which can lower your settlement amount. | 2-3 weeks |
| Totally anonymous settlement | We settle without giving the movie company your name or financial information. These settlements usually cost more. | 2-3 weeks |
| Full federal defense | We challenge the plaintiff’s evidence and defend you through trial if needed. The case becomes public record and typically costs $100,000+. | 12-18 months |

Compare Your Options Before You Hire a Lawyer
You may have already spoken with other lawyers. Here is how our approach differs:
| Your Concern | Antonelli Law | Other Firms |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure on the first call | We focus on lowering your stress first. You get honest guidance without pressure to hire. | Some firms focus on worst-case outcomes and push you to hire during the first call. |
| Settlement strategy | We build your strategy around your finances and who downloaded the files. | Some firms push every client toward the plaintiff’s opening demand. |
| Legal fees | We charge a flat fee, typically $3,000, so you know the cost before you decide. | Hourly billing can leave you guessing about the final bill. |
| Living in another state | We file electronically in any federal district, so your location does not limit your options. | Some firms say a federal case requires a local lawyer. |
| Experience with your plaintiff | We know the tactics that copyright plaintiffs often use. | Lawyers with less experience may only learn those tactics when handling your case. |
What Happens After You Get a Letter?
Once we review your filing, we walk you through the case from the first call through resolution.
Step 1
Free consultation
We pull your court filing and find the real compliance deadline. Exhibit A shows how many works the plaintiff alleges.
Timing: 24-48 hours
Step 2
Strategy review
We explain your options in plain English, including the cost and risk of each one.
Timing: During the consultation
Step 3
Negotiation
We deal directly with the plaintiff’s attorneys, so you do not have to speak with the movie company.
Timing: 2-3 weeks
Step 4
Resolution
We pay the settlement from our Client Trust Account, which keeps your payment details private. The plaintiff then dismisses the case with prejudice.
Timing: Final agreement
The settlement papers identify you the same way the lawsuit does: as a John Doe tied to a specific IP address, date, and time. Only one subscriber held that address at that moment. The agreement works like a land trust because it identifies the property without naming the owner. We sign the agreement as your agent and attorney.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Will My Settlement Cost?
The amount depends on the number of works alleged and your financial situation. A settlement typically costs 20%–40% more after the plaintiff serves a summons and amended complaint. Early action can lower the total cost. We do not promise a number until we review your court filing.
Does My ISP Letter Prove I Downloaded the Movies?
No. The letter only shows that a court linked your IP address to the lawsuit. The Ninth Circuit has ruled that account ownership alone does not prove infringement. Someone else in your household or on your Wi-Fi may have downloaded the files, and the plaintiff must show more than your name on the account.
Does a VPN Protect Me From This Lawsuit?
Not once a court issues a subpoena. Your ISP already linked the IP address to your account if it mailed the letter to you. Your defense then depends on who used your connection and what the plaintiff can prove.
What Should I Do If My Child Downloaded the Files?
Contact us right away, even if you are still figuring out what happened. We have handled many cases involving minors and can often resolve them quickly and discreetly. Tell us what you know during the free consultation. Attorney-client privilege covers that conversation.
What Happens If I Ignore the Letter?
You may choose to ignore an ISP letter, but never ignore a summons. Your ISP releases your identity after the disclosure date. The plaintiff then decides whether to drop the case or serve an amended complaint. Ignoring a summons can lead to a default judgment.
