Attention New York Residents: Strike 3 Holdings has Filed New Cases in Your State
Do you live in New York and have recently received a notice from your internet service provider (such as Spectrum, Verizon Fios, Comcast/Xfinity, HughesNet, Viasat, EarthLink, etc.) with a copy of a subpoena from a company called Strike 3 Holdings? Strike 3 Holdings LLC is a company that produces pornographic films. These adult films are typically published under subscription sites such as Slayed, Blacked, Vixen, and Tushy.
Each internet connection has a unique address known as an IP address. By using various methods and technology, Strike 3 Holdings was able to allegedly track illegal downloads of their adult film content to your IP address. Once Strike 3 Holdings has your unique IP address, they can do what is called a ‘reverse lookup’. Through this, they can figure out who provides the internet to your home. This can include companies such as Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, Cox, etc.
Now that the company knows your IP address and internet provider, Strike 3 Holdings can file a federal lawsuit for copyright infringement and ask a judge for permission to send a subpoena to your internet provider. This subpoena requests your personal details, such as your name and your address.
The notice you received is your internet provider letting you know your personal information is being requested. Before your internet provider releases this information, they send the subpoena notification to you. Again, when you first receive this notification, you are still considered anonymous. The court and Strike 3 Holdings still know you as ‘John Doe’.
